Aluminum Shapes Response to OSHA Press Release

Delair, New Jersey (January 29, 2020) – Yesterday OSHA’s Marlton Area Office issued a press release regarding recent citations issued to Aluminum Shapes. In an effort to interject some transparency in this process, Aluminum Shapes has released the following statement:

Aluminum Shapes wholly disagrees with the statements made by Ms. Dixon-Roderick on behalf of OSHA’s Marlton Area Office. The notion that Aluminum Shapes has disregarded its legal responsibility to comply with health and safety standards is false and misleading.

Aluminum Shapes takes its obligation to provide a safe workplace for our workers very seriously. The company trains its employees to treat safety as their top priority, and has implemented safety protocols exceeding industry standards. This is supported by recent history: 2018 and 2019 were Aluminum Shapes’ safest years on record, and prior to these most recent citations, the company had been inspected by OSHA seven times over the course of nearly three years without OSHA finding any hazards or issuing any citations.

Further, in 2019, Aluminum Shapes had a total of 13 recordable injuries plant-wide, less than half the average of 28 recordable injuries at facilities sharing Aluminum Shapes’ service and product scope. Far from being out of step with the “safety and health standards” cited by Ms. Dixon-Roderick, Aluminum Shapes’ standards are outperforming those of its peers.

“OSHA’s statement was counter-productive and factually misleading,” said Solomon Rosenthal, Aluminum Shapes Chief Executive Officer. “Our commitment to the health and safety goes well beyond the OSHA requirements. In just the past two years, we instituted training regimens that outstrip OSHA’s standard, added frequent mandatory safety-focused huddles, and began sponsoring healthy lifestyle initiatives. The results that we have obtained demonstrate that our methods are working. OSHA’s rhetoric notwithstanding, these citations—like the citations issued to the company in early 2017 and still under contest—were improperly issued.  We intend to contest these citations, and look forward to obtaining rulings by the courts in all pending OSHA matters, which we expect will set the record straight on the claims made by Ms. Dixon-Roderick.”

Aluminum Shapes to Expand Global Export Presence

Delair, New Jersey (June 1, 2016) – Aluminum Shapes LLC one of the country’s largest extruders of aluminum, announced today its plans to participate in the Trade Winds-Latin America Conference and Trade Mission in Santiago, Chile. The conference, hosted by the U.S Commercial Service, focuses on helping US companies connect with vetted foreign buyers and partners to facilitate deals in Latin America. To be eligible for this program, a company must currently export product, as well as source a minimum of 51% of their raw material from the United States. For Aluminum Shapes, exporting its American-made aluminum extrusions is a key part of its growth strategy to expand its global market share.

According to Brigette Douglass, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Aluminum Shapes LLC, “To be at the point where we can look toward aggressively expanding our exports is a great place for our company to be today. When we began our road to rebuilding, the focus was really on bringing the facility back up to speed.”

“Our success over the past couple of years can be attributed to the hard working men and women who, day in and day out, give us their all. We are looking forward to this next exciting chapter in the ‘Shapes’ story,” Douglass continued.

The “road to rebuilding” mentioned above by Douglass alludes to the multiple years Aluminum Shapes spent under the ownership of a private equity firm who had reduced the staffing and output of the company, during difficult economic times, to the point Shapes’ future was in serious jeopardy. It was only in the past few years when an international investment group took ownership of Aluminum Shapes that the future began looking bright again. The investment group immediately began making positive changes that affected not only production, but also the employee experience.

These changes are still in progress today, with the facility undergoing a complete renovation. Currently, Aluminum Shapes employs over 440 workers, most of whom are members of the Teamsters Local 107.

Tony Ceballos, Director of the U.S. Commercial Service in Philadelphia commented, “Seeing a local manufacturer such as Aluminum Shapes not only expand their workforce, but also focus their efforts on exporting products, is a testament to how the global economy can benefit a local workforce. We look forward to guiding them towards success and connecting them with international customers through our worldwide network in US Embassies and Consulates… particularly Latin America which is not only a destination for over 40% of our exports, but a market where U.S. exports are growing faster than trade with the rest of the world.”

The conference will take place September 7-9, 2016 in Santiago, Chile.

Improved Parking Lot at Aluminum Shapes

March 29, 2016 – Employees at Aluminum Shapes yesterday were welcomed by a freshly paved parking lot as they pulled in for their shifts. This is a welcome change from the tight spaces and potholes that were common in the parking lot before the repaving was complete. “Now when I show up to work I know there will be plenty of parking and I don’t have to worry about picking a spot without a pothole,” said Edward Fricker, an employee celebrating 19 years at Aluminum Shapes.

It is extremely important to us that our employees have a positive experience during their shift,” said Vice President of Sales and Marketing Brigette Douglass, “We feel that a positive experience begins as soon as they pull into the parking lot. By paying attention to the small things, such as parking, as well as the larger renovations we are undertaking, we are letting our employees know that we appreciate all of the efforts they put forward daily to make Shapes successful.”

Shapes has also showcased their commitment to the local economy by contracting American Asphalt, a South Jersey company to tackle the large job. “We were impressed with how quickly and efficiently American Asphalt completed the job,” said Vice President of Finance, Robert Otterbein. “They went the extra mile to ensure our workers experienced the least amount of disruption while repaving. We really appreciate their hard work and thoughtfulness.”

Ongoing Safety Training at Aluminum Shapes LLC.

In the auditorium located in the center of the production plant at the Aluminum Shapes Facility in Delair, NJ a large group of employees gathered for the 10th voluntary safety briefing and training session offered to every shift. These sessions are offered as a part of Aluminum Shapes’ ongoing commitment to their 400 employees’ workplace safety. While treated to lunch, workers were educated on safety topics such as molten metal explosions, personal protective equipment and best safety practices along with anecdotal examples and the consequences of false safety beliefs.

Brigette Douglass, Vice President of Sales and Marketing said “These training events are important on so many levels for all Aluminum Shapes employees. Having a chance to share lunch with everyone while showing them how much we care about their safety is important and essential. These events lend to a happier, safer and more productive workplace.”

The session was hosted by Alex Lowry, a workplace safety advocate and trainer from  Wise Chem. Vincent Gatto, Director of Operations at Aluminum Shapes said “As much as we focus on safety it is helpful for other professionals to come in and lend validity to what we preach daily. The examples Alex showed reenforce the potential consequences of even a momentary lapse in safety practices. I take every workers safety as a personal obligation and am happy to have opportunities like this to educate employees.

Aluminum Shapes Adds CNC Machine, Job Training

March 3, 2016 – In reaction to an expansion in Aluminum Shapes’ client base, the Delair-based company has added a second CNC machine to its facility, along with expanded job training opportunities to its existing employees to leverage it when filling new and existing orders.

Our aluminum is being used everywhere from the new Comcast building to the decks of U-Haul trucks,” said Brigette Douglass, Aluminum Shapes Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “As aluminum is incorporated into more applications generally, we’re seeing increases in the demand for value-add processes that enable our customers to reduce the need for additional finishing after we deliver the product.”

The new CNC machine, which will approximately double Aluminum Shapes’ capacity fulfill orders requiring precise detailing, came online on March 1, 2016.
